The much awaited supreme court ruling was delivered on 30th March 2013, ending two weeks of waiting to know who would be Kenya's next president. The delay arose from an election petition that was filed, disputing the election results as was announced by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission.

Notably, the Traffic (Amendment) Act 2012 brings into force heavy penalties for offenders, who will be handed longer jail terms and or higher fines than previously. For instance, any person found driving or in charge of a public service vehicle while intoxicated will be liable to a fine ‘not exceeding one hundred thousand shillings’ and or two years imprisonment; up from the prior fine of ‘fifteen thousand shillings’ and or two years imprisonment for the same offense – section 45.

Poaching continues to pose a major challenge to wildlife conservation, especially in the conservation of target species - Elephants and Rhinos. Reported cases of poaching in the country remain at a high since November 2012.

On Saturday 10th March there were multiple explosions reported at the populous Machakos country bus station in Nairobi, where 6 people lost their lives. The explosions, though still under investigation, are believed to have been grenade attacks in similar fashion to previous incidents in the same general location.

The Minister for Tourism on 8th March released statistics for the Tourism sector which put the sector’s performance in 2010 ahead of its previous best year 2007. Tourism registered a growth of 4.5% in 2010 compared to 2007, with international arrivals (excluding cross border entries) at 1,095,945 as at 31st December 2010, compared to a tally of 1,048,732 tourists for the same period in 2007.
